Top 9 Perform on American Idol, Season 10

And then there were NINE, Idol contestants that is.  I don't love them all but I still think its the strongest top group we've seen in Idol history.  This week they were able to sing songs from the members of the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame.

I loved watching Will.i.am work with the contestants.  I love Black Eyed Peas and Bryan loves Will.i.am's character in Rio from watching the commercials.

Casey Abrams
Casey, switched his song during through the planning process.  He ended up with "Have You Ever Seen The Rain ."  I think it was a very wise switch for him as they showed a brief clip of his first and it wasn't great.  He also brought the upright bass back which my husband, and I'm sure many others who like Casey in the beginning were happy about.  I liked seeing the softer side but not boring. I liked it!

Haley Reinhart
Haley chose Janis Joplin's "Take Another Piece of My Heart,"which is fitting since the judges have felt a Janis vibe before.  I thought she thoroughly rocked it out.  I'm not sure if there's a market out there for this sound.  What chart it would she be on?  I don't know, but I would be listening.  I LIKED it this week!!!  And so did the judges!!

James Durbin
James went a very different direct this week with "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." I didn't know the song, which often makes me like a performance a little less right off the bat, but I really thought he did a great job with it.  He proved that he can really sing more than the heavy rocker stuff.  Of course, it wasn't without a touch of pure James with his ending squeal.

Jacob Lusk
Jacob, not very surprisingly picked a Michael Jackson song this week.  He did "Man In The Mirror" and said if he doesn't go on to next week it isn't because he didn't sing it well but that America wasn't ready to look at themselves in the mirror.  But I have to say it was vocally one of his worst performances for me.  In typical form he finished big and strong but I thought the balance of it was weak.  The judges didn't agree though!

Lauren Alaina
Lauren did "Natural Woman."  She looked very Dixie Chicks and I thought she sounded great.  Started very soft and beautiful and hit the big parts well.  I don't have much to say about her other than I've loved her from the beginning and it was another great week for her.

Paul McDonald
Paul sang "Folsom Prison Blues."  It had a very different feel for him.  His crazy leg moves still make me crazy and he is NOT my favorite but he did a very good job tonight.

Pia Toscano
While several contestants slowed it down this week, Pia kicked up the tempo.  Pia sang "River Deep Mountain High."  She usually looks every elegant but this week she looked much more current and funky.  It was good to her do something different.  She did it a perfect job.  I still don't love her.  I don't think is HER so I just don't think she's found who she really is.

Scotty McCreery
Scotty paid tribute to his childhood idol, Elvis Presley with "That's Alright."   It was NOT country and I LOVED it!  OH MY GOD, he is just too cute!  Box him up, and I'll take him.  Scotty got my votes this week.  He did great and had fun!!

Stefano Langone
Stefano chose "When a Man Loves a Woman."  I have to admit I was ready for a total train wreck when I heard that.  But he totally pulled it off.  I still don't think he's top 5 material amongst this years talent, but it was one of his stronger performances in my opinion!

What did you think this week?  Did you like how everyone switched it up?  Which American Idol contestant will be going home this week?

  1. I watched but missed Paul's song. LOVED Scotty, too. Wow, he was so good.

  2. Thank you for the recap. This is the best group I have seen in all AI years except for Paul, who I understand has his fans but no me. For me he's next to go. I love Scotty and Steffano, Haley and Lauren are so good and so is Pia (I find her a little boring to watch) and the most AI skilled is James.

  3. I found Scotty the most entertaining of the evening. I really thought he was a one trick pony in the beginning but he is not at all. I like him!

Pia is my least favorite. I sense an enormous ego and I think her upper registry notes stink. They're very screechy. I can't see why the judges don't see it.

  5. My son did a show with Stefano Langone a few years ago, "Urinetown". He's amazing and such a nice kid. I'm so excited at how well he's doing!
