(A Wordy) Wordless Wednesday, 5/18/11

The school my boys go to count down to summer using the letters of the alphabet.  Monday was "N" for Nerdy day.  I suppose a part of me should be disappointed in the school for encouraging stereotypes, but I didn't even know there was such a day until Timmy announced it before excitedly running into his room to get dressed for school early Monday morning.  The photo above is how he left the house!  I should probably not have been so excited about my son's eagerness to rock this uncool look in the name of being Nerdy.  But I have to admit, I was honestly beside myself that he did this.  You see, my older boys (and most likely #3 too) have ADHD.  We are very lucky to have found a medication that works very well for them with very little physical side effects so I am not usually one to complain about the struggles of our kids needs.  But there is a very thin line for us between controlling the impulsiveness that could turn my ideal student into a principals office vip and stealing their personality.  When they do not take their medication they simply act without thinking.  They give little thought to the consequences, including what other people think of them.  But when they are correctly dosed, they are slowed down so that they can think thing through and act accordingly.  This is a huge benefit for them in their ability to function at school. maintain relationships with peers and simply keeping them safe.  But it comes as a bit of a cost sometimes as they are much more self conscious than the average elementary student.  So I bask in the moments when I catch my middle son dancing in his room with his headphones on or the days when my oldest, dons his best Steve Urkel attire and truly enjoys letting lose and being a kid.  There's plenty of time for long talks about how we won't call people nerds and about how those kids that you might be tempted to call such, will most likely be the next Bill Gates so you should probably be extra nice to them.

  8. all in fun I'm sure. YOur son did a great job with dress up and his excitement alone has to be so worth it.

My daughter school does a crazy hair day and 70's and cowboy day. the kids decide what day they are doing by nominating it out of3.

  11. Pretty cool outfit, if I do say so myself. I think you're totally right that there is plenty of time for teaching and learning and sometimes it's fun just to be a kid.

  14. I'm glad to read that you are proactive and not completely against medication because I lost a friendship over her refusal to not medicate her child and this child would throw kittens in a dog pen just to see the reaction. I am glad I moved out and away from that chaos but it hurts my heart she wouldn't consider medication because she tried one and it changed his personality. I just couldn't have a baby in that environment and she never took the blame. Its sad.

  16. I've never known a school that didn't have a "Nerd Day" for Spirit Week -- even when I was teaching. But, my AP students (who would have been the "nerds" of our school) LOVED it ... they loved playing up and making fun of the stereotypes and showing that they are NOT those things.

I think he looks cute and I'm glad he had fun.

And.... I was nerd too. For real. ;)
