I Wish I Was Rich

I have never been one to want to be a rock star or an actress.  I don't want fame.  But I can't say I would mind the fortune.  Money may not be able to buy happiness but it could buy me a little peace of mind. I wouldn't need to be filthy rich, just comfortable.  The kind of money that makes for stability and means you can live in a safe place with good schools and not worry about money on a weekly basis.

Unfortunately, I didn't take a road that lead me to that life, or if I'm being optimistic, hasn't led me to that life YET.  I somehow manage to make things work. We've never gone hungry and we have way more than we need.  But I'm not able to save anything either.  We have nothing put away for college for the boys or retirement for ourselves.  I do keep a small rainy day fund for small emergencies like car repairs etc but no matter how many times I say I will do better with putting money away, it just never seems to be there.

One thing we've needed to do for years now (like over 10) is get a good life insurance policy for my husband.  I have one that my mom started when I was little.  Its a lot of coverage for really reasonable because the price was locked in at such and early age.  However, trying to get coverage for a 40 year old (now 50+ year old) smoker at a reasonable rate, isn't so easy.  But  really it's about priorities.  Life insurance is one of those things that can be hard to carve out of your budget because its money you spend on the 'what ifs.'  We don't always want to cut out the things we enjoy today for something we don't know when we'll need.  But unlike some other types of insurance, its a given, someday someone you love will appreciate you having planned ahead.  For me, it's easy to put off the coverage for my spouse because I can convince myself, I'll manage if something happens.  I take comfort in knowing that should something happen to ME, there is coverage to pay the expenses and help take care of the boys for awhile until he can figure things out.  Thankfully, with his new job, he has a life insurance policy again because if I'm being at all logical, I know that my lil rainy day emergency fund isn't even going to put a dent into the expenses I'd have if something happens to him.

If you don't get have life insurance coverage, check out Genworth's Budget Calculator that will help you find a few extra dollars a month to get you the coverage you really need to protect your family when the unthinkable happens.

  1. We have small policies provided by our work, but they are nowhere near what would be needed if something were to happen to either of us. We really do need to look into better life insurance!
