The Fresh Start Monday Pledge

Now that the school year is well underway, children may already be complaining about their “boring” lunches. Their carrot stick isn’t crunchy, their bag of chips is half empty, and that plain bread and cheese sandwich just will not do. Accordingly, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum challenges parents and caregivers to take the Fresh Start Monday pledge and pack a creative and healthy lunch for their children each and every Monday this school year.

The Fresh Start Monday program was inspired by the Museum’s new permanent exhibition, Nature’s Lunchbox, which explains food’s life cycle – from the farm to the market to the compost bin – to encourage visitors to think about how their food choices impact the environment and their health. To make this challenge easier for you, Nature’s LunchBox features a recipe kiosk that provides healthy, fun recipe ideas. Recipes are also available on the Museum’s Facebook page, where lunch-makers can share recipes, get new lunch suggestions and see what others are doing to support their pledge – all on the “Discussions” tab.

When I went to school lunch meant a pb&j, a snack sized bag of chips and a twinkie.  But there is a huge movement to make healthier and greener lunches.  If you haven't heard of BENTO before, let me introduce you to doing lunch a WHOLE new way!!  Mind you, my kids get lunch service at school so this not something I have done, I am simply passing along the inspiration.  I have several friends who DO pack lunches this way so it IS possible.
What would your kids do if they opened a lunch that looked like this??
