Pocoyo DVD Review

I am pleased to introduce to you a brand new preschool property that has recently launched in the U.S. called POCOYO.  The television series brings children into the bright and exuberant world of POCOYO, an inquisitive fun-loving three-year-old boy and his animal friends.  POCOYO encourages children to “learn through laughter.”  POCOYO is already an international sensation, and we hope U.S. audiences equally embrace this special property.

The television series began airing this summer on Nick Jr. and the first line of merchandise (available at Toys”R”Us) and DVDs are being released this fall.  We would love for you to consider reviewing the first title in the DVD series, MEET POCOYO!

In Meet Pocoyo!, a September 7, 2010 DVD release from NCircle Entertainment, preschoolers will learn through laughter as Pocoyo and friends explore the world around them.  In seven hilarious stories, Pocoyo enjoys making music, blowing bubbles, solving puzzles and even watching an egg hatch.  Filled with sights and sounds perfectly tailored to encourage child development, Meet Pocoyo! was created to engage, entertain and educate preschool age children. The DVD runs 47 minutes and features both English and Spanish language tracks. Meet Pocoyo! is available at now.  SRP $6.99 (introductory rate).

Our family actually discovered Pocoyo about 2 years ago on Youtube.  When Bryan wasn't even yet one he had a time every night (much like when he was newborn) where he was CRABBY.  It didn't matter what we did, he was just not happy and it was way too early to be bed time.  Eventually I found that videos of the Mickey Mouse Club House theme song, "The Wheels On the Bus," "If You're Happy and You Know It" and Pocoyo would quiet him down.  The videos we watched of Pocoyo were all in Spanish, but he didn't seem to care.  I don't' know if its the bright colors or the cute sound effects but something drew him in even at that young age.  So I was of course thrilled to learn that Pocoyo was coming to the US.  The new DVD was clearly easier for me to watch, because I was left racking my brain trying to recall a sliver of the four years worth of Spanish I learned 15 years ago.  But whatever the real attraction of Pocoyo, it's there for small kids, regardless of the language.

Here is one of the videos we used to watch of Pocoyo:

And the trailer for the new Meet Pocoyo DVD:

Pocoyo is visually very different to any other pre-school program. The innovative use of CGI animation allows Pocoyo to become a very real child-- he moves, talks, plays and learns like a toddler, and he can sulk and throw tantrums like only a toddler can! The ‘parent’ figure is voiced by writer/actor Stephen Fry who guides Pocoyo with gentle humor as he explores the world around him.

Pocoyo has a strong educational content, but never sacrifices its entertainment value or sense of fun. The characters, storylines, sounds and visual appeal of Pocoyo have been carefully researched to ensure that it’s perfectly tailored to encourage child development.

The philosophy behind Pocoyo is ‘Learning through Laughter™’.  A research study undertaken in the UK by Dr. David Lewis has shown that laughter not only increases the enjoyment and engagement of the child but is proven to increase learning by 67%.

Check out this fun new friend with your preschooler!
