The Gift of Caring #KleenexCares

The holiday season can bring out the worst in people.  Somehow in the name of good we can become consumed with greed.  I attempted to slow my kids holiday greed from the very begining using, what else, but fear of the big guy in red and his much feared naughty list.  When we talked about the kids Christmas list, I always told them that if their list was too long that would mean they were being greedy and that could get you on the naughty list.  For the most part it's worked.  Of course, I still go over board each year.  I'm (mostly) happy to say that I've passed on my love of giving to my kids too.  I'm pretty sure they'd give happily to every person they care about if we could.  But since our budget isn't as endless as our love, it just isn't possible to give everyone in our lives a gift of monetary value of which they deserve.  Thankfully, for most people it really IS  “the thought that counts.”  And usually when you know that that thought genuinely came from an adorable young man who cared enough to want to do something to make you feel special...well, it can often mean more than any pricey gift.

I know this time of year there are teachers across the country who will be flooded with gifts of coffee mugs, lotions and candy.  It can be hard to shop for someone you know very little about.  Kids might know slightly more about their teachers than we do but if your kids are anything like mine, they can't remember what they did all day at school so it's unlikely that they'll remember if s/he has mentioned a favorite restaurant etc so you can surprise them with a gift card for a nice dinner.  And I know in our schools where money is extra tight for most families, the gifts are far less frequent.  We try each year to make something special for the boys teachers.  And I know at least on of the boys teachers has a special place for cards, pictures and letters from her students as she told me a couple years after having had Timmy in her class that she'd just looked back through her stuff and read the letter Timmy had written her.  That's why I was thrilled when I asked Johnny who he'd like to give our second Kleenex Brand Care Package too and he chose his teacher.  She really enjoys having Johnny in her class and especially loves his art and his stories.  So he's writing a special story to go along with her care package which he will give her next week just before their break.

I think doing something like this rather than just grabbing a gift card for a teacher, makes a child pause and consider how much someone like a teacher really means to them.  Having THEM take a little time and effort will mean a lot more to a teacher but it also makes them appreciate how lucky they are to have these special people in their lives too.

Being Thankful for Our Health #KleenexCares

This time of year many people begin to focus on the many things they have to be thankful for.  Truth be told, there is a slight problem with this seasonal appreciation, you see there is a whole lot of year left that we aren't doing enough to acknowledge what we're thankful for.

We're feeling a slight lack of thankfulness in our boys lately.  Maybe it's the age. Or maybe it's that they are spoiled.  When they were little, they were supper thankful for things.  Often they'd tell me 'Thank You' more times than I could count for something super small.  These days however, we can spend an extravagant day out and about doing super cool things that many kids will never have the chance to do, yet the one thing I hear about is the stuff I didn't let them do. How they didn't get to pick where we ate or didn't get to buy a souvenir.  It's beyond frustrating.  A huge part of me wants to pack them up and ship them off to somewhere where there is REAL need for a week or two.  To make them realize that they are so unbelievably blessed to have a family that loves them, a roof over their head and an abundance of food.  I'd give my right arm to get them to understand that the world will NOT in fact end because they can't watch TV or play video games until they pick up their room.  Which is, by the way, an insane mess because they have far too many toys and no place to put them.

But this season, I'm trying to figure out how to realistically regain our focus.  While I'd love to send them on a trip to see some of the things I've seen on mission trips, or even experience real hunger with those less fortunate in our own back yard, I think they are still a little too young.  I don't think it has to take something so drastic either.  So this season I endeavour to take on a year long journey (not simply one that will end when I'm sufficiently stuffed with turkey) to lead by example.  To share and express my gratitude for the many, many small blessings in my life as well as those that seem small, until they are taken away.  Things we take for granted each day, like our health and the health of those around us.

With the stresses of daily life, we can get caught up in things and lose focus of the things that really matter.  So this season as you're counting your blessings, don't forget to consider your health.  Take a few extra steps to take care of you and your family so that you may enjoy good health through the coming year.  And if there are those who's health isn't perfect, be sure to show them a little extra love this season!!

Sharing Surprises #KleenexCares

It's the time of year, the season of sniffles and sneezing.  We've already had a few ourselves so I try to always have some Kleenex tissues in my purse...just in case.  With all the time we spend outside in this chilly weather even otherwise healthy noses can end up runny.  And I've been happy to help out a other moms at football practices with my purse pack of tissue.

Unfortunately others we know have already suffered worse than a cold.  One of the boys on Timmy's football team ended up with Pneumonia (or ammonia as Timmy told me).  This is the littlest guy on his team and he didn't get a whole lot of playing time.  But Timmy was still upset to hear that his teammate was sick.  He immediately asked if we could get him a get well card.  We didn't really have time to get a card before we'd see him but I DID have the Kleenex Care Package.

Timmy felt like he'd really done something for his friend.  Me, knowing it probably made his mom feel better than him.  It was great knowing my son cared and worried for his friend.  I just wish we could have done more to help knowing that this teammate's mom is about to have a baby any day and dealing with a sick 5 year old sounds exhausting and overwhelming!  But I hope that this very small act at least brighten their day just a little.
I'm not looking forward to this cold and flu season but I try to be thankful because I know that we usually have it easy.  Several years ago the older boys had a horrible bought of rotovirus that they passed back and fourth for almost 4 weeks.  So every year we don't deal with anything like that I thank my lucky stars.

And don't forget to take a few Kleenex tissues with you as you trick or treat this week.  I can't tell you how many Halloween costumes ended up with snotty sleeves.  Looks like it will be a chilly one here this year so I'm sure there will be runny noses aplenty.

Showing Kids the Power of Sharing #KleenexCares

As the mom of three kids, teaching my kids about sharing, isn't only the RIGHT thing to do, it's truly a necessity.  That's not to say I always feel like I'm succeeding at this lesson.  But I really do try.  And for the most part, when it comes to people outside our household, my kids are pretty darn good at it.

I tried to start early by teaching my kids everyday lessons about sharing like not eating in front of others if you don't have enough to share. Of course this lesson has ended up being a rather expensive one lately as we spend almost everyday at a sport or activity surrounded by other kids and waiting for a late dinner. This means snacks...and bringing plenty of extras to share with our friends.  But let me try and get away with not sharing just once and my kids will be the first to call me on it.

We also try to do bigger lessons for our kids about how we're very blessed compared to so many and that we need to be sure to share what we have.  Over the years this has meant giving a portion of the money they earn to a charity of their choice.  And possibly the hardest one we've done yet was having them donate toys to Toys for Tots.  The first time we did this is was something each of the older boys received as birthday gifts. They'd gotten doubles of the same item and has simply gotten a TON of toys just before Christmas.  They agreed to this act of giving but actually doing it...well it was a bit tougher.  But each year since they have helped pick out toys to donate, whether it be new items we have in the house that they were willing to part with or, if we were able, going out and buying items.

But Of course, I think leading by example is the most important way to teach our kids.  I try to do this in regular ways such as donating to good causes etc.  But I also love doing simple things to make someone's day.  There's nothing quite like just deciding to buy someone's morning coffee.  Even if you walk away before they know what you've done...that feeling will a smile on your face all day!
