My Thoughts:
After hearing many mixed reviews on this movie, I was very curious to watch it and see how we liked it.  I have to admit that it wasn't long before my 3 year old lost interest.  I'm really not sure what it was lacking for him as he typically has fairly mature viewing habits, but with about 10 minutes he was encouraged to go find something else to do because he was not watching the movie and was just distracting.  However the older boys stayed glued to it the entire time.  They enjoyed the story line and when I mentioned afterward that Romeo and Juliet was a really old play but obviously there were some changes, they were curious to know what happened in the play versus some specific scenes in the movie.  I think I'm going to have to rewatch the Romeo and Juliet movie to refresh my memory as to it's appropriateness for my kids.  For me the movie was not a new all time favorite, but I loved the music and enjoyed the look of the movie.  The contrast of all the bright blue and red just made it bright, sort of cheery movie for me.   As I said, I'm not really sure what the missing element was or if it was several smaller elements that failed to make this the typical blockbuster, but I think it has a more classic feel.  There is much less silliness than more current Disney film's and also lacks some of the great lines that fly over the heads of the kids but make the movie great for adults.  But I don't think you should write it off if you haven't checked out for yourself.  You never know what might light a spark for you or your kids.  You might have the next Shakespeare on your hands and just never know it until they are inspired!  My kids (older kids at least) really enjoyed it and said they will definitely watch it again.
Disclosure: Our family received a complimentary copy of this DVD for review purposes.  However, all opinions express are my own honest personal feedback.
