#Pinktober Week 1 Photos

I don't know, it may seem silly to some. I know it's not changing the world or anything.  But this year I looked into my closet and realized I own a lot of pink (mostly dark pinks but still) and decided that I was going to wear pink every day of October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness and in memory of my mom, whom I lost 3 years ago this month.

Here's my first week in photos:

Football Fever

This weekend was the first game that my son's team wore their pink socks in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  I'd say his grandma was smiling down on him, even though he was benched for the first quarter because of issues at school and attitude with me.  But he and the rest of the defense rocked, completely shutting out the other team 0-20.  Pretty impressive considering their opponent held the possession for almost the entire first quarter. And at one point in the fourth quarter they were at the 9 yard line with a first down.  In four attempts they weren't able to get past the 1/2 yard mark!!!  Timmy had several really good tackles.

And my littlest buddy is turning into a great cheering partner.  For a little guy, he has some good lungs.  I can't imagine where he gets it. (I may have thought I'd be losing my voice for the second time this season.)

But would it be wrong to say that possibly the best part of the game was that it was played in a town an hour away from us where they are lucky enough to have a Sonic?  Celebratory Sonic was pretty darn tasty even if it was a little chilly out!

Posh or Protected?

When it comes to my phone, I MAY have a slightly unhealthy love for an inanimate object.  I used to say I felt completely naked when I forgot it at home, but I can't even tell you the last time I actually let that happen.

So knowing its something that is ALWAYS on me, I'd love to have it be representative of my personality.  I crave a super cute case for my phone.  But when I got the Samsung Galaxy S III it was still very new and I couldn't find any cute case options (I totally googled this while still in the meeting learning about the phone with Verizon). So I opted for a white cover available from the Verizon store that promised serious protection for my new baby.

The case adds some noticeable weight to the otherwise sleek phone, but she's nice and safe in there.  And I hadn't really given much thought to changing her wardrobe until I saw this Pinterest board of cute cases now available.  I really love this pink striped case...especially since it's October and I'm wearing pink every day this month.  But when I look at the case, which seems thinner than mine, there is no protection for the front of the phone at all.  So I'm conflicted, can I really put my treasured phone at risk just to look stylish??
available here

How do YOU pick your phone case? Fashion or Function?

Disclosure: I am participating in the Verizon Wireless Midwest Savvy Moms program and have been provided with a wireless device and six months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the product.”

Support Those Who Support Breast Cancer Awareness

Thought this might be of interest to some.  While I try to do what I can to support American Cancer Society and Susan G Komen directly, its also nice to know that I can support businesses that support breast cancer causes as well!!  Here is a piece by Kendal Perez to help you find where some of those businesses are!

According to the American Cancer Society, over 225,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2012. Sadly, the organization also estimates that nearly 40,000 women may lose their fight with breast cancer this year. For people who have been impacted by this devastating disease, breast cancer awareness is a daily reality. For others, October is their annual reminder to stay informed and get involved.
Though a number of companies support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the following list of brands represent great opportunities to help out.
eBags
eBags' Pick Pink campaign runs year-round with 10 percent of sales from pink products going to the Denver affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. After placing a pink item in your shopping cart, check the appropriate box to ensure your 10 percent donation is associated with the sale.
JCPenney
JCPenney Salon is offering free haircuts and styles to all breast cancer survivors during the month of October. Additionally, $1 from each of the first 50,000 haircuts will be donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Aerie
Purchase any bra in the Bright Pink Shop between Sept. 29 and Oct. 6 and $1 will be donated to support breast cancer awareness.
White House | Black Market
Purchase a bracelet from the Give Hope Collection and $10 will be donated to Living Beyond Breast Cancer. You can also purchase a Give Hope Tee for a $20 contribution to the education and support organization.
Yoplait
The pink lids are back! Yoplait's annual "Save Lids to Save Lives" program will donate 10 cents to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for every pink lid they receive. The yogurt brand will donate up to $2.5 million to the cause.
Oriental Trading Company
The popular party supply store supports Susan G. Komen for the Cure with their Running Ribbons Products. 15 percent of sales generated from cups, streamers, water bottles, coin purses and more will be donated. Plus, FreeShipping.org offers an exclusive coupon code for free shipping on orders of $49 or more, allowing you to avoid pesky delivery charges.
LOFT
Showcase your style and support breast cancer research in three ways from Ann Taylor LOFT. Purchase a LOFT Cares Card for $25 and 90 percent of the value will go to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. You can also buy a necklace designed by Giuliana Rancic -- a breast cancer survivor -- and 25 percent of the cost will be donated. Finally, purchase any full-price item from LOFT's Pink Collection and 25 percent will go to the cause.
National Football League
That's right, the manly men of the NFL support Breast Cancer Awareness Month through "A Crucial Catch" campaign that includes players sporting pink accessories during games. Though all teams show their support in October, the Dallas Cowboys take their pledge a step further with the iPromise campaign. This campaign encourages fans and supporters to make personal promises to support the cause and also offers pink-laden team gear for purchase.
Ford
Ford has been active in its support for breast cancer awareness since 1993, but its Warriors in Pink program is one of the few that donates 100 percent of the net proceeds to the cause. In addition to apparel and accessories for men and women, you can also create a custom T-shirt with a personal message. Naturally, car decals are another way to show your support.
KitchenAid
As part of their Cook for the Cure campaign, KitchenAid offers popular products in pink with a portion of proceeds going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. You can also participate in the Pass the Plate campaign when you purchase and register a Villeroy & Boch plate. Prepare and serve a dish on the plate for a friend who can re-register the plate and pass a prepared dish on to another friend. Each time a plate is registered, $5 is donated to the cause.
Caribou Coffee
In support of Amy Erickson -- a former "roastmaster" who lost her battle with breast cancer at just 33 years of age -- you can purchase Amy's Blend products and 10 percent of sales will go to CancerCare. The non-profit organization offers free assistance to individuals, families and caretakers affected by cancer.
On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina
On the Border donates a minimum of $250,000 annually to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. You can help out as part of their Fiesta for the Cure campaign by adding a donation to your bill the next time you dine with them.
