#Pinktober Week 1 Photos

I don't know, it may seem silly to some. I know it's not changing the world or anything.  But this year I looked into my closet and realized I own a lot of pink (mostly dark pinks but still) and decided that I was going to wear pink every day of October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness and in memory of my mom, whom I lost 3 years ago this month.

Here's my first week in photos:

Day 1
Day 2
Day 3
Day 4
Day 5
Day 6

Football Fever

This weekend was the first game that my son's team wore their pink socks in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  I'd say his grandma was smiling down on him, even though he was benched for the first quarter because of issues at school and attitude with me.  But he and the rest of the defense rocked, completely shutting out the other team 0-20.  Pretty impressive considering their opponent held the possession for almost the entire first quarter. And at one point in the fourth quarter they were at the 9 yard line with a first down.  In four attempts they weren't able to get past the 1/2 yard mark!!!  Timmy had several really good tackles.

And my littlest buddy is turning into a great cheering partner.  For a little guy, he has some good lungs.  I can't imagine where he gets it. (I may have thought I'd be losing my voice for the second time this season.)

But would it be wrong to say that possibly the best part of the game was that it was played in a town an hour away from us where they are lucky enough to have a Sonic?  Celebratory Sonic was pretty darn tasty even if it was a little chilly out!

Posh or Protected?

When it comes to my phone, I MAY have a slightly unhealthy love for an inanimate object.  I used to say I felt completely naked when I forgot it at home, but I can't even tell you the last time I actually let that happen.

So knowing its something that is ALWAYS on me, I'd love to have it be representative of my personality.  I crave a super cute case for my phone.  But when I got the Samsung Galaxy S III it was still very new and I couldn't find any cute case options (I totally googled this while still in the meeting learning about the phone with Verizon). So I opted for a white cover available from the Verizon store that promised serious protection for my new baby.

The case adds some noticeable weight to the otherwise sleek phone, but she's nice and safe in there.  And I hadn't really given much thought to changing her wardrobe until I saw this Pinterest board of cute cases now available.  I really love this pink striped case...especially since it's October and I'm wearing pink every day this month.  But when I look at the case, which seems thinner than mine, there is no protection for the front of the phone at all.  So I'm conflicted, can I really put my treasured phone at risk just to look stylish??
available here

How do YOU pick your phone case? Fashion or Function?

Disclosure: I am participating in the Verizon Wireless Midwest Savvy Moms program and have been provided with a wireless device and six months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the product.”

Support Those Who Support Breast Cancer Awareness

Thought this might be of interest to some.  While I try to do what I can to support American Cancer Society and Susan G Komen directly, its also nice to know that I can support businesses that support breast cancer causes as well!!  Here is a piece by Kendal Perez to help you find where some of those businesses are!

According to the American Cancer Society, over 225,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2012. Sadly, the organization also estimates that nearly 40,000 women may lose their fight with breast cancer this year. For people who have been impacted by this devastating disease, breast cancer awareness is a daily reality. For others, October is their annual reminder to stay informed and get involved.
Though a number of companies support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the following list of brands represent great opportunities to help out.
eBags
eBags' Pick Pink campaign runs year-round with 10 percent of sales from pink products going to the Denver affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. After placing a pink item in your shopping cart, check the appropriate box to ensure your 10 percent donation is associated with the sale.
JCPenney
JCPenney Salon is offering free haircuts and styles to all breast cancer survivors during the month of October. Additionally, $1 from each of the first 50,000 haircuts will be donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Aerie
Purchase any bra in the Bright Pink Shop between Sept. 29 and Oct. 6 and $1 will be donated to support breast cancer awareness.
White House | Black Market
Purchase a bracelet from the Give Hope Collection and $10 will be donated to Living Beyond Breast Cancer. You can also purchase a Give Hope Tee for a $20 contribution to the education and support organization.
Yoplait
The pink lids are back! Yoplait's annual "Save Lids to Save Lives" program will donate 10 cents to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for every pink lid they receive. The yogurt brand will donate up to $2.5 million to the cause.
Oriental Trading Company
The popular party supply store supports Susan G. Komen for the Cure with their Running Ribbons Products. 15 percent of sales generated from cups, streamers, water bottles, coin purses and more will be donated. Plus, FreeShipping.org offers an exclusive coupon code for free shipping on orders of $49 or more, allowing you to avoid pesky delivery charges.
LOFT
Showcase your style and support breast cancer research in three ways from Ann Taylor LOFT. Purchase a LOFT Cares Card for $25 and 90 percent of the value will go to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. You can also buy a necklace designed by Giuliana Rancic -- a breast cancer survivor -- and 25 percent of the cost will be donated. Finally, purchase any full-price item from LOFT's Pink Collection and 25 percent will go to the cause.
National Football League
That's right, the manly men of the NFL support Breast Cancer Awareness Month through "A Crucial Catch" campaign that includes players sporting pink accessories during games. Though all teams show their support in October, the Dallas Cowboys take their pledge a step further with the iPromise campaign. This campaign encourages fans and supporters to make personal promises to support the cause and also offers pink-laden team gear for purchase.
Ford
Ford has been active in its support for breast cancer awareness since 1993, but its Warriors in Pink program is one of the few that donates 100 percent of the net proceeds to the cause. In addition to apparel and accessories for men and women, you can also create a custom T-shirt with a personal message. Naturally, car decals are another way to show your support.
KitchenAid
As part of their Cook for the Cure campaign, KitchenAid offers popular products in pink with a portion of proceeds going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. You can also participate in the Pass the Plate campaign when you purchase and register a Villeroy & Boch plate. Prepare and serve a dish on the plate for a friend who can re-register the plate and pass a prepared dish on to another friend. Each time a plate is registered, $5 is donated to the cause.
Caribou Coffee
In support of Amy Erickson -- a former "roastmaster" who lost her battle with breast cancer at just 33 years of age -- you can purchase Amy's Blend products and 10 percent of sales will go to CancerCare. The non-profit organization offers free assistance to individuals, families and caretakers affected by cancer.
On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina
On the Border donates a minimum of $250,000 annually to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. You can help out as part of their Fiesta for the Cure campaign by adding a donation to your bill the next time you dine with them.

The Strength of 1

Get ready, get set, get checked!

Now through the end of October, 2012, the makers of Freschetta® pizza are helping to promote breast cancer awareness through their new The Strength of 1™ campaign, which includes sponsoring Bright Pink, the only national non-profit organization focusing on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women, while providing support to high-risk individuals. The mission of this The Strength of 1™ initiative is to inspire everyone to realize they can make a difference in some way in the fight against breast cancer.

I'm sort of embarrassed to admit it but I'm a little late on my annual exam.  I am usually vigilant. I HATE Dr (almost as much as dentists)and I am in general horrible about making time to take care of myself or spend money on myself.  But I'm simply too afraid not to take care of my female health because of our family history.  However, life has been a little extra busy lately.  So I am thankful for The Strength of 1's reminder to get an appointment scheduled.  Even if taking care of YOUR health is the only thing you can commit to doing this October, its enough to make a difference not only for you but for your family who depends on you.

Won't you head over to Take The Pledge?

I occasionally receive compensation in the form of products for posts. However, the opinions I share are solely my own.”

PMS and Cancer SUCK!!!!

So last week I noticed several times that I felt a little over emotional.  There was also some stuff going on that added to that but I could tell the PMS beast was lurking.

But then Saturday I had some where to be with the boys.  I thought nothing about this location as I punched it into the GPS on my phone.  Then almost an hour from home I exited the highway and it took only seconds to feel the tightening in my chest.  At first I was too busy merging and navigating construction to understand why.  Then it hit me...the chipper voice of the GPS was guiding me within blocks of the building I visited many times during what has been the darkest time in my life...the last days of my mom's life.  I have never really shared much of her last days but when her round the clock care became too much for the family, she was moved to hospice care in a fabulous facility.  They were wonderful to our family.  They were kind and gentle with my mother.  They did their best to give her the dignity that cancer was viciously stealing away from her.  But no matter how many good things I can say about the people who cared for her, for us, there...that building, God anywhere down that street, it quickens my heart and puts a lump in my throat.  It is really the only PLACE where I can instantly be taken back to those horrible days.  I am thankful that it is almost an hour away and not a place we pass frequently.

On this particular day I was alone with the boys and minutes from a business meeting so I swallowed hard, wiped a few stray tears and said a silent 'I miss you' to my mom.

But that evening, I was catching up with my DVR and this commercial literally stole my breath away and the tears flowed...you really have to watch closely to get it.

Next week the PMS will be better...
But  CANCER WILL STILL SUCK!!!

Hot Man App for Breast Cancer Awareness #Pinktober

THEY’RE HERE! HOT MEN INVADE THE APP STORE AS THE “YOUR MAN REMINDER” FREE APP LAUNCHES FOR NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
Check out Rethink Breast Cancer’s Latest Video Sensation Showcasing Cute Guys, Beautiful Breasts and an Important Message Featured HERE
Ontario, Canada- October 11, 2011 - Rethink Breast Cancer today announced the launch of Your Man Reminder, an innovative early breast cancer detection App for iPhone.  The free App created by john st., features a choice of cute guys who pop up regularly with an encouraging reminder to get in touch with and know your breasts.
This early breast cancer detection campaign is the latest promotion from Rethink Breast Cancer, a Canadian charity which uses humor and sensitivity to elevate breast health messages to women in their 20s, 30s and 40s who otherwise might not think they are at risk. Two years ago the group launched the viral sensation Save the Boobs for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and also hosts the annual Boobyball black tie fundraiser, coming up this year October 14th in Toronto.

“Our experience is that many young women are not aware of their risk for breast cancer,” said MJ DeCoteau, Executive Director, Rethink Breast Cancer. “The use of ‘hot guys’ as a reminder for women to be breast aware is actually a great way for them to learn about breast health in a non-scary way. The idea behind our education initiatives is to break through the information clutter and remind women to know their bodies and be proactive in protecting them.”
Download the free Your Man Reminder App today and join the fight in early breast cancer detection for celebration of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and then show your breasts some T.L.C. (Touch. Look. Check.)  From the App choose from one of six guys to provide the monthly reminder and then share with a friend to see what guy they utilize. With the touch of the screen, customize the App by changing the special calendar settings and appointment reminders. Utilize the ‘Signs and Symptoms’ tab within the App to answer any questions or concerns.
The Your Man Reminder App is available now to download free for iPhone mobile devices and will be available for free download on Android mobile devices later this month.
In 2006, Rethink launched a TLC campaign in Canada to encourage women to be breast aware.  The campaign asks women to Touch their breasts to feel for anything unusual, Look for changes and be aware of shape and texture, and Check anything unusual with a physician. For more information about Your Man Reminder and the TLC campaign, please visit www.rethinkbreastcancer.com

Breast Cancer, there's an App for that! #Pinktober

Breast Cancer, there's an App for that!  Not to make light of a very serious topic, really I'm not.  But I do LOVE that today's technology can help fight this battle against.
The Breast Cancer Diagnosis Guide mobile app walks you through your breast cancer pathology report and other tests and information that you and your doctor will use to help decide which treatments are right for you.
Add your diagnosis information for easy reference, and receive relevant articles from Research News. The app includes illustrations and definitions.
The Breast Cancer Diagnosis Guide mobile app was named an Official Honoree by the 2011 Webby Awards.

Included in the Breast Cancer Diagnosis Guide

The Report Guide to help you understand your pathology report and other test results. Together with your doctor, we encourage you to fill in the questions you find in the Report Guide. You can then take your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad with you when you visit other doctors so they have the most accurate information.
The Word List, which contains definitions of common pathology report terms.
The Articles for Me area. After you've answered enough questions in the Report Guide, Breastcancer.org will send relevant news and research articles to your phone. Articles for Me are provided by Breastcancer.org's Research News program. News articles are provided by MedPage Today, along with commentary from Breastcancer.org experts.
The privacy of your information is extremely important to us and we will never give, sell, or otherwise disclose your personal or health information to anyone.

I haven't personally had a chance to check out this app but I immediately began thinking about the many possibilities that an app could have for a breast cancer survivor.  One thing I remember from very early on in my mom's battle was her little note book.  As a family member there were often times I didn't felt like she'd asked all the right questions, or gotten ALL the information.  But what information she had, she wrote down in a tiny little notebook.  She wrote the dates of each and every test she had done as well as treatments.  She wrote questions she had for her Dr and answers from her Dr she wanted to share with us.  I can only imagine how organized and much easier it could have been if it was all on a smart phone.  I think that it is wonderful to see technology make life easier for survivors to handle all the information they are overwhelmed with or let them connect with other who are going through something similar.  This app could also really help family or friends of someone with a new breast cancer diagnosis.  Sometimes it's hard to ask such matter of fact questions of someone who had been handed such an overwhelming diagnosis.

Guiliana Rancic and Orbit Gum are Busting Breast Cancer Myths #Pinktober

#Pinktober Positive Tips For Breast Cancer Prevention

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when much attention is focused on the rising incidence of breast cancer and the benefits of screening and early detection of this condition.

In the U.S. there is a large amount of fear surrounding the subject of cancer, yet the disease is more predominant in the U.S. than in other Western countries. The media perpetuates this, and the anxiety associated with cancer can wreak havoc on our immune systems. So how do we approach breast cancer awareness in a positive way, and without fear? Chicago Healers Practitioner and Holistic Physician Dr. Marilyn Mitchell, MD offers three positive perspectives to help take charge of your health and protect yourself as far as cancer is concerned:

    Physical Health:
    - Screen DIY first. Screening is an important aspect of breast health awareness. Begin with breast self exam (BSE), a systematic palpation of the breast performed once per month. Women often ignore their breasts, and a regular self exam can be performed with an attitude of bringing positive energy and appreciation to the breasts.
    - Don’t forget your doctor. A doctor can offer you a technological breast screening, which should be scheduled every 1 to 2 years. There are several types of technological screenings for breast health:
    1) Mammogram - The standard screening tool for detecting breast cancer and benign breast disease. Mammograms are able to detect masses before they are palpable.
    2) Ultrasound – Helpful in imaging cysts. This device is usually an adjunct to mammogram, as it does not image solid tumors as clearly as fluid-filled ones.
    3) MRI – This is sometimes used as a follow up to mammogram.
    4) Thermogram - A screening exam that accesses the heat or thermal changes in the breast (reflecting blood flow). This does not involve radiation or compression of the breast. There is much interest growing around this technology, but it is not yet in widespread use, and the long term data and success at detection is not yet determined.
    - Take your vitamins. Certain natural supplements and antioxidants taken on a regular basis can help the body fight off cancerous cells.
    - Toss the burnt popcorn. Carcinogens are often linked to cancer, so it is important to distance oneself from carcinogens and other irritants as much as possible. That said, you can have a summer barbecue, but try not to grill out too often.
    - Evaluate your risk factors. Do you have a family history of ovarian cancer? Don’t wait to find this out before it’s too late – knowing this information can help you take the necessary steps to decrease your risk of having cancer.
    - Don’t forget the basics. Sleep, exercise, and a healthful diet are all building blocks for a healthy life.

    Emotional Health:
    - Build your support system. Strong relationships with friends and family boost the immune system and lead to a long, healthy life. These people will be there for you to rely on, both in sickness and health.
    - Teamwork counts. Encourage friends and family to make healthy changes to their lifestyle as well. This will make healthy habits easier and more fun to adopt.

    Spiritual Health:
    - Think positively. Surrounding yourself with positive thoughts and eliminating negative thoughts can be very beneficial in eliminating stress. This will significantly affect your well-being for the better.
    - Nurture yourself. Self-compassion is a key ingredient to a sound mind and body. Practice self-love by treating yourself to bubble baths, a nice book...things that make you happy.
    - Limit your media intake. Overdosing on TV and sensational media can be a source of negativity and stress that you don’t need. Think about cutting down on this and replacing the time you would spend watching the news with a positive activity you enjoy.
    - Be grateful. Nothing beats negative energy quite like counting your blessings. By regularly thinking about what you are grateful for in life, this will make you in good spirits which is also good for your body.

By tending to our physical, emotional, and spiritual health, we can open our heart centers to ourselves and work to lead a healthy lifestyle.  If you get a diagnosis of breast cancer, be sure to build a team of support around you and a holistic plan of care. Make sure you have medical, emotional, nutritional support, as well as supportive relationships. Seek out a support group or therapist if you need it. Be sure to choose positive thought patterns to support you. Become empowered to be the leader in your health care.

But I'm Too Young #Pinktober Survivor Stories Guest Post

If you aren't a blogger, you might not understand the community that exists between bloggers but in the Chicago area there is an amazing group of local bloggers. Last year in November Brandie won one of my ticket giveaways and I've been following her blog closely ever since, even though we haven't had the pleasure of meeting in person yet, I was crushed to learn of her breast cancer diagnosis.  I asked her if she'd be willing to share a little of her story directly with my readers, but be sure to check her out at her blog as she is an amazing woman who has been so real about her fight that you will not be able to help but connect with her and her story!

When we think about breast cancer, we most often picture women over 40. Afterall, 40 is the age that doctors recommend we go get our first mammogram. Well, okay, we know that it can happen to younger women, but it’s rare, right?  Heck, my mom had breast cancer when she was 30, but I never thought I would get breast cancer young. You see my mom was told it was a fluke. She was an anomaly. And they caught it early. Surgery was her only treatment – no chemotherapy, no radiation. No other women in her family have had breast cancer (and she has 6 sisters so it’s not like it could have struck others!) so I wasn’t worried. I had always written on health history forms that my mom had breast cancer – no doctor ever even asked me about, so I really wasn’t worried!

But this year I switched a new gynecologist. At my yearly exam, she asked me many questions about my mom’s breast cancer. We decided it was time to get my first mammogram. Not because either of us were worried that I had cancer – nope. I had no concerns and I passed the physical exam with flying colors. I was going to get my first mammogram now solely because my mom had breast cancer so young.

So I went to my mammogram – very nervous too. Not nervous something would show up. Oh no, I was much too young. And healthy.  So you can imagine my surprise when the doctor let me know I needed to have some follow-up, that there were 2 cysts they wanted to watch and some other spots that looked suspicious. Exactly 1 week later I was in for a biopsy. And I was told that it was probably nothing. This time I felt more nervous. And then, 5 days later my entire world changed when the biopsy came back positive for breast cancer.

Breast Cancer. Shocked doesn’t even begin to describe how I felt. It was just so crazy. I mean, I couldn’t really have breast cancer. I was too young. And I was healthy. And nothing made any sense. I didn’t have any symptoms that I knew about - I never even felt a lump.

My world was turned upside down.  Even worse? The lives of my family was turned upside down – my husband, my 3 children, my parents, my sisters, every single person who cared for me.

And I can’t help but wonder what if I’d payed more attention? I won’t lie to you – I didn’t do monthly self-breast exams. I did them about every 3 months. But what if I had done it every month? What if I had educated myself more? The truth is I did have signs of breast cancer. I just didn’t know. I thought I only had to worry about a lump. Nope. Breast cancer symptoms can show up as a rash on the skin, dimpling of the skin, changes in your nipple, changes in the shape/size/density of the breast, etc. {You can find a list of signs here} My doctor missed them too at my appointment, so I try not to beat myself up too much, but it’s hard not to think about what if’s. But honestly? Breast cancer was never really on my radar. Even with my mom’s history, I thought I was too young.

The truth is about 9% of breast cancer is in women under 40. Breast cancer can hit at any age. Here’s the scary thing though – for women under 40, breast cancer is more deadly than for those diagnosed over 40. This is because we and our doctors think we are too young to have breast cancer. So we wait longer to go to the doctor when we feel a lump or show other symptoms. Doctors don’t always think of breast cancer at first so we are more often misdiagnosed. Combine this with the fact that cancer in younger women is more often aggressive, and well, it’s easy to understand why our survival rate is lower than women over 40.

So I urge you, regardless of your age, make your body your best friend. Know your body. Study your body. Examine your body. This includes doing self-breast exams. You know your breasts best, so please, study them! I know that sounds funny, but you should study them and know how they feel. So that you can be aware as soon as changes start to occur. And do not be afraid to go to your doctor with any concerns. If you are embarrassed to talk to your doctor about your breasts? Get a new doctor who you feel comfortable with. Trust your gut. If you think something is off, get it checked out. Do not wait. Do not fall into the trap of thinking you are too young, that it can wait, that it can’t possibly be anything to worry about.

Take it from me - You are not too young. It cannot wait. And it could be something to worry about.

#Pinktober, Pambras Bra Liners Review and Giveaway

    Original Style Bra Liner

The Original Style is where it all began years ago (1990).

A soft cotton liner worn in your bra, Pambra’s absorbs perspiration under and between the breasts. Pambra’s also adds comfort to that cute little under wire bra that isn’t always so comfortable.
So, toss out the powders, rags and mini pads so many have resorted to. It is our unique blend of fabric and cotton that absorbs moisture and keeps it away from the skin.  Doctor tested and approved, Pambra’s virtually eliminates the threat of fungus, and prevents heat rash from developing.
Pambra’s have no pins, hooks, or tapes; the liners have been proven to stay in place with a properly fitted bra. (A properly fitted bra has no more than two fingers space to pull away from the body.)

Pambra’s are sold in packages of three, one color per package, and are machine washable and dryer safe.

    Full Line of Pambra's Products

    My Thoughts:
There are a lot of products on the market that have made me pause and question, "Why didn't I think of this?"  But upon seeing Pambra's my thought was, "Why didn't my MOM even think of these?"  I spent years giggling at my mom as she'd remove wadded up tissues from her bra at the end of a day.  Apparently the ladies in our family have very healthy sweat glands.  We sweat..a lot!  And while I didn't fully understand her struggle early on, these days I am fully aware of what she was fighting off with her little secret tissues.  This might be too much information for some but it is a fairly regular occurrence that I have to hang my bra to dry before I can even toss it into the laundry basket.  In addition to feeling gross and causing constant washings of pricey delicate items this sweat can lead to uncomfortable chaffing and even lead to more serious conditions.  But I seriously think that had I had the chance to get Pambra's for my mom she would have been ecstatic.  I have to admit I never really used my moms tissue remedy because with my luck I'd drop sweaty little tissue bombs at the most inopportune time.  But I do LOVE how Pambra's work.  It took me a little getting used to, to get them in and with my super cheapo bras (the kind that ride WAY up in the back  because they have literally ZERO support in the front) I am not able to use them effectively.  But with a proper bra and a minute of time, these are great.  I personally HATE under-wires and really only wear them on the nicest of occasions but Pambra's made a HUGE difference in the comfort in even my most comfortable under-wire.  I considered sharing photos of their ABSORPTION, but sorry, I'm not feeling that self-deprocating.  You will have to trust me in that they are super soft and absorbent.

    #Pinktober: Poo~Pourri

Going Above and Beyond the Call of Doody!
Going above and beyond the call of doody is a philosophy Poo-Pourri embraces in all aspects of the business. From finding the perfect blend of essential oils for eradicating toilet bowl odors, to creating attractive packaging and enticing tag lines, Poo-Pourri is always up for a challenge. Which is why they have decided to make a dedicated effort to raising breast cancer awareness for more than just the month of October. From May until the end of 2011 they are donating 20% of proceeds of all No. 2 4 oz Before-You-Go Bathroom Spray to help raise awareness and support for breast cancer (donation made to Susan G Koman). No. 2 is a sweet smelling air freshener that's a big hit with tweens and the young at heart. The combination of Mandarin, Bergamot, and orange with hints of peaches and berries leaves a fresh and fruity scent after every flush. “Just spray the loo before No. 2, and no one will ever have a clue!”The discreetly sized two ounce bottle fits easily in purses, helping users add a dash of class to your bathroom business.

I personally use Poo~Pourri in my house.  Because my 3 year old is not potty trained it often gets stinky in our house and one spray of Poo~Pourri Jr makes all the difference in the world.  It is seriously the best odor fighter I have found. At $19.95 for the 8 oz bottle it sounds pricey but it lasts FOREVER.  Honestly, one squirt of this stuff in the garbage neutralizes the worst diaper odor.
