Battle: Up to 4 players can sing together in this mode! Each player sings the same parts and the player with the highest score wins.

Bryan singing

Timmy's one attempt!

My Thoughts on Sing 4: The Hits Edition for Nintendo Wii:
You can't see it well but that highlighted score is MINE!
I am in LOVE with this game.  I love music and I love singing, I'm not really good. I would never attempt to sing in public, but I enjoy signing and Sing 4 features a TON of songs I love.  There were only 3 songs that I didn't know all the words to already.  Songs that I would consider current hits to 70s and 80s songs too.  Timmy tried once and when his 'baby' brother beat him, he gave up.  But Johnny, Bryan and I have played this for hours.  The first night we played I sang every single one of the 40 songs.  I even have scores on several of the leader boards.  I am however a little tired of the song "Tik Tok" by Kesha because it is the only song Bryan wants to do...over and over and over.  There are also more songs that are available for download which I will be figuring out how to do soon so I have more new songs to try.  I really appreciate that you have the option to do a long or short version of every song so I can set it to short for Bryan.  The only thing I would change if I could is that each song already had a full leader board.  If the leader board was blank to start, it might have been a little more encouraging for the boys to be able to see there name up there as none of them have scored high enough to beat the lowest preset score.  But overall, I think this one is a great value for the money if you like to sing along to your favorite tunes!

Wappy Dog for Nintendo DS #GamersGiftGuide2011

  • Wappy Dog engages gamers to raise their very own interactive puppy in both the real and virtual worlds and teach cool tricks, play mini-games and even converse! In Home Mode, communicate with Wappy via your Nintendo DS, and watch the physical dog react appropriately. In Travel Mode, interact with Wappy inside the Nintendo DSs virtual world.
  • Every Wappy Dog experience is a personalized one. Give Wappy another name, customized both the in-game version and physical dog with different colors and accessories, choose from various environments and toys. You interaction with Wappy determines the dogs constantly evolving personality, skills and happiness, just like a real pet one that sings and dances that is!
  • Unprecedented Level of Interaction:Wappy Dog develops strong emotional attachment through deep simulation and the real-world interaction of a physical companion Conversational prompts are answered with hundreds of evolving barked responses translated by the DS software
  • Thanks to data exchange between the toy and game, the virtual and physical Wappy Dog share the same experiences
  • The physical Wappy Dog cheers or cries, expressing mood through sound or movement based on how well Wappy is performing
My Thoughts on Wappy Dog for Nintendo DS:
This was a very different style of game for our household because most of the pet games available make a slightly girlie look to the packaging and marketing so the boys won't touch them.  But with a blue puppy and no real signs of 'girlieness" the boys instantly fell in love with Wappy Dog.  The two different modes allow you to play in very different ways.  My kids also discovered for me that you can play with Wappy even without your DS.
My boys have been pretty good in keeping their DS's nice but most other things in our house have a very short life so I was nervous about how Wappy Dog would hold up, but after several weeks of playing our Wappy is covered in stickers (included to personalize your dog) but otherwise still in perfect shape. The only issue we've had with Wappy Dog is the boys getting frustrated when they have the DS and are playing and the other two won't keep their hands of Wappy.  When they are playing together nicely it's great, if anyone doesn't cooperate, it gets ugly!  But overall this has been a hit in our household.  Even Dad has enjoyed playing with it with Bryan and he usually isn't into the kids games at all!

My Thoughts:
I have been enjoying dance games for awhile now but I have had a hard time getting the boys to play with me.  When ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS™: CHIPWRECKED VIDEO GAME arrived though, they were all more then ready to check it out.  We had a blast playing!  I probably shouldn't admit this but Bryan (3) did just as well as I did and Johnny (7) actually did the best out of all of us.  I have been a Chipmunk fan since I was the boys age so this game brings me back to being little, but just with WAY better video game graphics.  One thing I liked was how quickly, and realatively easily, we were able to unlock additional songs.  It starts with only about 5 songs available to you but before we had even played all of those we'd unlocked at least 10 more.  And the first 5 had some fun options.  This game will be great for helping keep all of us moving while having fun this winter while we are stuck inside!!  And my boys loved that you can chose which 'munk' you are.  Bryan especially would NOT play if a Chipette is selected.

Drawsome Tablet Review for Nintendo Wii #GamersGiftGuide2011

Just in Time for the Holidays, Drawsome Tablet Comes Bundled with Two Games for a Family Friendly Price Today, Ubisoft® announced that Drawsome Tablet, the newest drawing peripheral on the market for the Wii system from Nintendo, is now available at retail outlets throughout the United States. Drawsome Tablet is the only tablet for Wii that comes bundled with two games: Drawsome Artist and Drawsome Sketch QuestTM. Both games encourage players to unleash their creativity, as well as challenge players to embark on fun family friendly gaming adventures. Drawsome is rated E for Everyone and is available for the suggested retail price of $59.99.

The Drawsome Tablet features a large 8.5-inch screen that allows for unrestricted drawing movements and features an innovative transparency layer that covers the drawing area, so players can trace their favorite images. Drawsome Tablet includes a wireless stylus which means players movements will not be limited by a tether; the size, shape and feel of the pen also allows for a user-friendly experience for children. Everything drawn on the Drawsome Tablet will be displayed in real time on a home television. Using an SD Card, users will be able to share their masterpieces easily with friends and family! With Drawsome Artist, players can draw, paint and color by sketching on their own, or learn advanced art techniques step-by-step. They can even interact with their favorite characters from The Smurfs, the world-renowned animated brand, and learn how to draw and color them thanks to a huge gallery of predefined models. Also included is Drawsome Sketch Quest, in which players embark on an adventure to help a variety of cute animals race through their world by drawing bridges, trampolines and more. With 40 characters and 80 levels, there is never a dull moment in either solo play or family friendly four-person co-op.

My Thoughts on the Drawsome Tablet for Nintendo Wii:
The Drawsome Tablet comes with two games.  The first game is Sketch Quest and requires the player to use drawing to help little animals safely navigate each level of the game.  As you progress through levels you go from having to help the animals up and out of holes to having to quickly create ledges and boxes so the animals don't fall to their demis.  My boys thought it was funny that when you messed up and one of your animals died it's little angel floats up to 'heaven.' This game does require some patience and some decent reaction time and accuracy as you get up in to the more challenging levels.
The Drawsome Artist game is mostly an art studio featuring the Smurfs!  The boys LOVED this and spent hours coloring, drawing and covering the 'page' with stickers.  It took a few minutes to figure out how to navigate through chosing your tools (brush, pencils, pastels etc) and the color selection.  But the boys were off and giggling at their creations quickly.  In the color option you have a ton of Smurf themed coloring pages.  Coloring is great for even little kids as it doesn't let them color outside the line, where ever area of the page they set their tool into is the only area that gets colored no matter how much they scribble outside the line.  And of course there is the fill option that lets them fill an entire area quickly with one tap of the stylus.
This was our first experience with a drawing tablet that works with the Wii and it took a little getting used to but I was surprised at how receptive it is.  Once you get a little practice and are comfortable with it, it is pretty easy to use.  This is one of Bryan's new favorite things to do with the Wii!!

Guest Blog: Language in Video Games, from Lindsay Blogs

As you MIGHT have noticed, I've been writing a lot lately about video games.  If you aren't into video games feel free to skip over all those posts but they are relevant to my family and lots of other families so I enjoy sharing.   Thus far we've only had family friendly games in our house so I haven't really seen what the 'Rated M' games are like these days, but friend Lindsay has and she is here to share some thoughts on that with my readers.  Please be sure to leave her some comment love here and stop by her blog too!

I'm a closet gamer mom. I'm not into the hardcore gaming anymore like I used to be, but I still enjoy the occasion zombie-blasting and black ops mission.

I'm also a pretty lax mom when it comes to certain things. For example, I don't mind my kids watching me blast zombies because I can explain to them that they aren't real and, honestly, they don't even look real in the game, so they're not freaked out by it. They are more likely to cheer me on than they are to cry in horror or fear. So, I will allow them to watch video games and sometimes even try them out. The stuff on the screen doesn't bug me all that much.

What does bug me is what's coming out of the speakers. The constant foul and all-around nasty language coming out of a game is completely unnecessary and is not something I will allow my children to hear. Why is every other word in Left 4 Dead 2 a curse word? Why does Battlefield 3 need the f-bomb to narrate the game?

My children copy way too much for me to allow that in their brainwaves! I pride myself on sheltering my children from the language of the world. I know I can't shelter them from the news and the inherent violence that runs rampant in our society today. However, I'm pretty confident that "butthole" is the worst thing they've ever heard me say. They watch Sprout and Nick Jr when the TV is on and maybe the occasion cooking show on Food Network. They don't watch dramas or comedies or anything that I might watch after their bedtime because the language is simply not something I want them exposed to.

Why then - on a game that is clearly meant for entertainment and not solely for adults - is cursing running rampant on my Xbox? Why is there not an option on many of these games to disable this language? It seems like it should be common practice to allow this "feature" to be turned on and off, like a parental control, but apparently I am alone in this belief.

I guess that I will just have to save my zombie killing for late nights and make sure the games I choose to play at any other time are kid-friendly or have a language setting.

Oh, the plight of a gamer mom!

  • Cook off with up to 4 players in Challenge Mode.

My Thoughts on Cooking Mama 4 for Nintendo 3DS:
I was excited for a new Cooking Mama game with new dishes to master!  I wasn't sure how it would play in 3D but found that only the top, direction screen was in 3D so it was  fun but didn't make cooking more difficult.  Overall I felt that the dishes were actually easy to get perfect.  Others are saying that this is because the game is more sensitive/accurate than previous versions.  I got perfect scores on almost all the dishes I tried on the first or second try.  Some I had to redo because I didn't understand what I was supposed to do the first time around but did well the second time.  But the best part of Cooking Mama 4 is that there are more extras in this game that give lots of extra playing time!  If only I could cook this well in real life!!  At least I can have fun pretending!!

My Thoughts on Peggle for Nintendo DS:
Peggle is a great game for all ages.  This is one of my personal favorite games that we played for the gift guide.  It's part strategy and part luck.  It almost feels like playing an old school TV game show.  You figure out your strategy, aim and shoot and then just sit back and wait and see how the ball bounces.  I think the strategy behind it has some educational value as its geometry based.  It isn't a game my three year old can get through too many levels of (unless he gets a really lucky bounce) but he still has fun playing it because he enjoys just watching the ball bounce and things like up.  It's a little like pinball except that once you let the ball go you have not control over what happens.  This is a game I will be playing myself for sure.  Great if you're looking for a totally clean, family friendly game!!

My First Wii Remote #GamersGiftGuide2011

My First Wii Remote – Micro-sized, kid-friendly remote designed for Wii players with smaller hands that also features interchangeable Disney artwork.

My Thought on the My First Wii Remote:
This is such a fabulous accessory for gaming families with little ones!  Bryan (3 years old) always wants to play all the games we play and for the most part he handle the remote pretty well (he is a mean Wii bowler already) but sometimes games with a lot of button use he struggles a little because of the size and weight of the regular remote.  My First Wii Remote is perfectly sized for toddler/preschoolers.  With both Cars and Disney Princess designs available there is sure to make your little gamers happy.  My First Wii Rmote has a wrist strap and attaches to a nunchuck just like the standard remote.  This Wii accessory is definitely mom and preschooler approved!

Developed by Black Lantern Studios, DaGeDar for Nintendo DS is rated “E” for Everyone by the ESRB.

My Thoughts on DaGeDar for Nintendo DS:
DaGeDar is one of the must have toys for boys this year and after spending hours playing with them with the boys, I was very curious to see how they had turned it into a DS game.  Essentially this is a racing game.  It is a challenging game that my boys spent the entire first day attempting to beat which surprised me.  Not that it was challenging but that MY kids would stick with it for that long.  Each of them played it for a good amount of time and even m over tired, not at all patient 3 year old didn't get upset with it even though he played it enough to know that it was telling him "you lose" after each unsuccessful round.  I think it was because of the fast paced rollercoaster feel of the DaGeDar track and easy use.  It was easy enough for them all to play but would be challenging enough for 10+ easily too.  This one gets two thumbs up from this mom and even from my winless kids!

Disney Universe for Nintendo Wii #GamersGiftGuide2011

Disney Universe is an off-the-wall non-stop action adventure where Disney worlds and characters mix up for the first time. Suit up in iconic costumes and face challenges in legendary Disney worlds. Defeat enemies, collect coins and powerups, unlock new costumes and explore with friends as you battle in a mix-up of worlds inspired by numerous Disney and Pixar films.

Game Features
  • Suit-up for action as more than 40 classic and contemporary Disney characters including Alice, Mike, TRON and Stitch.
  • Mischief, magic and mayhem reign as players explore 6 different worlds inspired by Disney and Pixar films.
  • Team up with up to four friends to solve puzzles or defeat enemies or toss your friend into trouble!

My Thoughts on Disney Universe for Nintendo Wii:
This game was a huge hit with my boys, but especially my 3 year old.  Even though he honestly couldn't make it through a single level unassisted, there was something about choosing which character he was dressed as that made him fall in love.  My 7 year old found the game challenging but he was able to make his way through levels.  I played for a good long time myself and also found it a little challenging but a lot of fun.  Where else can you put out building fires with water balloons while shooting at pirate ships.  Overall the most impressive element for me was the large variety of scenes that were available.  Many have to be unlocked but it really gives you a lot of playing time without repeating levels.

My Thoughts on NCIS Video Game for Nintendo Wii:
I know that this game is rated Teen but we actually enjoyed playing this game with my father AND my kids.  I wouldn't let me kids watch NCIS on TV because its more graphic but their grandpa and grandma are both retired police officers and they have been wise to the evil in the world for a long time thanks to our less than desirable neighborhood situation.  So animated robbery and shootings really didn't affect them.  This is obviously a personal choice and therefor I suggest researching something before you decide what is appropriate for your own kids.  But for me, playing with my kids to solve these crimes was not only fun, it was also beneficial because their quick thinking brains made the connections in the evidence quicker than mine!  The analysis of evidence (shoe prints, finger prints and shell casings) isn't overly difficult but making the deductions based on that evidence will get your mind working.  I personally like this game a LOT because although one person handled the remote, we were really all able to work together to play the game.  If you are a police show fan who likes to try to figure out 'who done it' I suggest checking out this game!!

My Thoughts,
I have loved country music for years but I have never been a country line dancing person.  I love watching it but have always lacked the rhythm and memory to be able to line dance.  While I was dancing by myself to this game so I wasn't technically line dancing, most of the moves were those I recognized from line dancing.  This game features songs at three different difficulty levels and I didn't even attempt anything beyond the first level because I am still attempting to get a decent score on those songs.  If you enjoy these dance type games and enjoy country music and a bit of a challenge, I highly recommend Country Dance 2.  It is fun and had me moving switch in my opinion is more important than my score.  But admittedly my 3 year old who doesn't even attempt to follow the directions half the time was scoring just as well as I was!!

• Experience nature in a variety of settings, such as the Forest, Mountains, and Seas in day, night, snow, and more!
• Find treasure that you can use in further adventures, or even to decorate your camp.
• Collect insects, fish, treasure, and more, and then survey your collection in your scrap book. Aim to find everything!
• Perfect mini games you’ve unlocked in Challenge Mode.

My Thoughts on Camping Mama:
I have been in love with Cooking Mama for years.  My kids have developed a love for her games too but it as initially MY game.  So I was excited to hear that a new game was coming to the line, but with a different spin.  Camping Mama is a fun new game that my boys actually enjoyed more than the other 'Mama" games we have because there is more game going on in between the typical challenges "Mama" has.  You work your way through the different scenes, being careful to avoid thinks like snakes as you make your way to the camping themed mini games.    Enjoy camping without the bugs in your sleeping bag with Camping Mama for Nintendo DS.

My thoughts:
This is one of those games that seemed like EVERYONE was playing but I hadn't checked out just because of the name honestly.  I'm not much of a zombie freak and I had assumed it was a dark game.  But now I get it!  This is a crazy addicting game.  The first time I played I lost within seconds.  I wondered, what the heck people could possibly love about this game, I didn't understand it.  Then after a few attempts, I accidently got it right and I fell in love.  I would suggest doing what I recommend to my kids with every new game...READ THE DIRECTIONS.  If you play video games at all, you know the manuals that come with the game have become pretty much useless. BUT the on screen directions actually tell you a lot if you don't get impatient and flip through them.  I am pretty sure that was my mistake but nonetheless it probably took less than 5 minutes to get the idea anyway.  And then I played for about an hour without realizing how much time had passed.  The boys had fun watching me play and then eventually playing on their own...you know when I am willing to give it up!

My thoughts:
My kids have loved the Spy Kid series for several years so there was no doubt that this game would be a hit with them.  We haven't seen the movie so I'm not sure how closely it ties in but do know it was a fun play for the boys.  I didn't play it myself but watched my 7 year old gamer play for some time.  It seemed to be just the right amount of challenge for him as he played with his tongue sticking out the side of his mouth, a la Micheal Jordan, in concentration but did not get upset with not being able to do things.  It kept his attention for a long time and has been a game he has gone back to play regularly.  For the price of 19.99, I think it deserves 3 thumbs up (what? I'm borrowing a thumb) for any Spy Kid fan in your house!

My Thoughts:
This adorable game based on the much loved Pillow Pets is truly great for any age.  At first glance I thought it might be too "girly" for the boys but really the game isn't geared for either gender.  So if you have a Pillow Pets lover, they will likely like the game.  It isn't super challenging but that makes it fabulous for the younger kids.  My three year old really enjoyed playing it was actually easy enough for him to handle.  The only thing that seemed to through him is that the coins you collect continue to regenerate after you collect them so in a multilevel areas he would often go back through the same areas several times before I could convince him to continue on to finish the level.  But both he and my 7 year old really enjoyed not only 'collecting' the different Pillow Pet characters but also being able to NAME them.  They came up with some really interesting names for their new friends.  This is one of my favorite new games to grab for road trips for my little man because he is actually able to handle it without whining or constant requests for help.  If you are looking for a beginner game for younger kids, or just for a Pillow Pet fan, I think this is great one!

Frogger 3D is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB and is now available for the Nintendo 3DS™ for $29.99.

My Thoughts:
As a child of the 80's, I played a LOT of Frogger. So when I saw the notice for Frogger 3D I KNEW I had to get my hands on this game!  And I am glad I did!  I think this is great combination of old school and new technology.  It requires just as much patience as the original game....waiting for just the right moment to hop into action.  As I progressed through the levels, each one required a little more thought to see the safe route.  I think most of the levels had more safe places to wait out the traffic than the original Frogger, which makes it a little less stressful.  However with the 3D element, as well as more non-moving obstacles, you really have to think more because it's not as straight forward as the original game.  I absolutely love this new twist on a old classic!  It's a great way to introduce my own kids to a game I loved when I was a kid without the eye rolls at outdated graphics etc.  And as a momma in my 30s I have to say Frogger is still as quick as he was 30 years ago!! This mom give Frogger 3D two thumbs up for sure.

My Thoughts:
This is a game my kids began asking for as soon as the saw the commercial for it.  It combines two of their favorite things, video games and action figures!!  When I saw this game back in August at BlogHer I have to admit I was a bit mystified by how it worked.  I can't say that I truly understand how it works now but it did make a bit more sense once I opened the box and learned that there is actually a USB slot in the back of the Wii where you plug in a USB receiver for the 'portal of power.'  The next thing that struck me as a mom of THREE boys is that the game comes with THREE characters so each of my guys got their own 'guy' right off the bat.  Anything that eliminates fighting is sincerely appreciated by this momma.
Then there is the actual game, which was a big hit!  It is a fun adventure game in a world where different characters can open different areas of that land.  I was worried about what would happen if the boys played around with the characters while the game was playing but it is actually designed for it.  This game really is great for all ages as long as you're OK with shooting type games because my three year old enjoyed playing it with minimal help or frustration.  And the older boys (and I) really had fun playing it too.  There MAY have been some shooting of the good guys going on just to hear them make funny noises.  And there was lots of talk about 'priceless treasure' as you collect coins and gems throughout the game.  You also collect protective head gear like pots and anvils to increase the strength of your character.  Overall, this game gets two thumbs up from our family and although it is only a 2 person game, it is one that is fun to watch others play too!!!  While it IS on the pricier side for games, I really love the cross play options that lets kids use their characters to play out their video game adventures away from the screen as well.  I really hope they will continue to grow this collection as I think the concept is great and has lots of great growth potential!!
